Student Stories: Michelle Lee

Graduated in Full-stack Web Development

Q: Tell us about yourself

I am currently a student in Minerva Schools at KGI. I just finished my freshman year. Since I’ve already learnt some programming languages and web development at Altcademy, I have become a peer tutor in the Computer Science modules for my classmates.

Minerva is a new undergraduate program from KGI. It works like a tech startup. We don’t have in-person lectures. Most activities are project-based. Everything is done online. We get to travel around the world throughout the 4-year education.

We were living in San Francisco, and we are heading to Seoul next. Even though everything is done online, all the students live together, and so we can also study together.

Q: How did you join Altcademy?

I actually started Altcademy right after my high school graduation. Back then, I’ve been learning Python on my own. One day, my dad enrolled me in Altcademy and asked me that I try learning there. It was like a present!

I was very happy and super impressed about Altcademy. It’s self-paced and project-based, which helped me learn a lot more. The mentors are proactive in answering questions and helping me out.

I’ve also developed a good habit to publish my work online, such as Github. Sharing your work can inspire others!

Q: What are you doing now?

I am taking my 4-month summer break now. I am mostly working on my own projects. One projects I am leading is called The Last Mile. The mission of The Last Mile is to prepare incarcerated individuals for successful reentry through business and technology training.

We’re building an intranet learning platform for them. Through [its programs]((https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/24/san-quentin-coding-school-the-last-mile/)) in partnership with the California Prison Industry Authority and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, incarcerated individuals can learn HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Python, web design and others in San Quentin, the oldest prison in California.

Q: What are you going to do next?

I am starting my second year in September 2018. Looking ahead, I want to continue working on my current projects on hand. It’s a great experience for me to work with others and gain skills in working effectively in a team.
